    How the room-size split works

First, the shared-space percentage of the rent is split equally per person, so a couple sharing a room pays two shares. The rest is split by each room's weighted size: square footage × (1 + feature adjustments). A private bathroom adds 15%, a walk-in closet, balcony or parking spot adds 5% each, and a small or windowless room takes off 5%. Use "Other ±%" for anything else.

    Example: $2,400 rent with 40% shared. The shared $960 is $320 per person. The other $1,440 is split by weighted size: 180 sq ft + bath = 207, 130, and 110 − 5% = 104.5.

    Frequently asked questions

What percentage of rent should be for shared space?

Most households pick 30–50%. Use a higher share when the common areas are large and the bedrooms are similar, and a lower one when bedroom sizes differ a lot.

How much more should a room with a private bathroom pay?

A common rule of thumb is 10–20% more than a similar room without one. The calculator uses 15% by default, and you can adjust it with "Other ±%".

What if two people share a bedroom?

Set "People in room" to 2. They pay two shares of the shared-space part, and the room's size part is split between them.

Does it work with square meters?

Yes. Only the ratios matter, so any unit works as long as every room uses the same one.
