        How settle-up works

For each person, Billsplitly subtracts their share of every expense they took part in from what they paid. Then it finds the smallest possible number of payments that brings everyone to zero. It looks for subgroups whose balances cancel each other out and settles each one on its own, so you often need fewer payments than the usual N−1.

Example: Alex paid $800 for the cabin, Sam paid $164.40 for groceries, and Jo paid $90 for kayaks that Riley skipped. Each person's share and the payments needed appear on the right.

        Frequently asked questions

How does it find the fewest payments?

It checks every way the group can be broken into subgroups whose balances add up to zero. Each subgroup of k people needs k−1 payments, so more subgroups means fewer payments. For groups of up to 16 people with non-zero balances, the result is guaranteed to be the minimum.

        Can someone skip an expense?

Yes. Untick them under "Shared by" on that expense and they won't pay any of it.

        Is my trip data saved?

It's saved only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to a server.

        Does it handle different currencies?

Enter all expenses in one currency. If you paid in several, convert them first at the rate you agree on.
